I have an Acer Tree with some kind of disease on it's bark, what is it and how do I treat it.

I 2nd, being most fungus feed on dead wood.

the tree may live for a few more years depending on the fungus but you risk it falling and that may cause damage.

Well I am sorry to say that, that is a pretty serious fungal disease. The tree needs removing and all the timber burnt.
As to which one it could be one of many.
