I have a few hawthorn whips which have grown well. If I plant one in my front bit of open, quite sunny garden, will it grow into a tree? If you think it would, how should I prepare the soil? It would be in grass at the top of a small slope.

yes it will. they are not fussy just dig a good hole at least 2 or 3 x the size of the pot it is in. Trees establish better if the hole is more square/rectangular than round. Which is good as I am not very good at round holes.
As it is on the top of a small slope make sure it gets enough water at least this year until the roots have made a good network.
