Black appearing on small front lawn

United Kingdom

My neighbour (no access to computer) has suddenly found growing in his (small) patch of grass in his front garden, a circle of black which appears to have mushrooms growing out of it. Can you recommendan antidote? Many thanks Mrs M Smith

A photograph would be helpful - slime moulds and algae, dog lichen, all these cause black areas in grass, some of which might be slimy, others curl up as they dry out, not usually with toadstools growing in the middle though, so not too sure what's happening there. Are you saying the black area is blackened grass, or a "deposit" of black, as in slime mould and dog lichen?
