i was given some dahlia rhynzomes (pathfinder) i believe it is a new edition how can i make sure they will survive the winter untill june next year when i will plant them in the borders will they also like being in a container on my sunny patio the colours are orange and yellow and single i dont't surpose they will come true from seed sonia

Dahlias will die down at the first frost. They should then be either dug up and stored in a frost free place or really well mulched and left in the ground. However, if the winter is as severe as last year they may not survive outside. They grow faster and flower sooner if dug up and started off in pots and replanted in late May.
