Gardeners World did a test once, some bulbs were planted the right way up and others upside down.....they all came up together.

If you really can be bothered then look at the corms and you can usually see the new growth beginning now. If there is none then you plant them with the hollow upwards. But as Heron says it really does not matter. All I ever do is dig a hole and chuck some in and cover.

Surely most bulbs, crocus, daffy etc are pointed, so you put the point facing upwards, I planted hundreds of aliums today, tiny weeney bulbs, but most were pointed and easy to sort which end goes where!!

I find it difficult to decide which way up anemone corms should go. I always thought that was why I didn't get many coming up - til we had the rabbit fence.....

What I would like to know is, how do they know which is up when it's dark down there? :-)))

'Cos they have a gravity senser in them as do many plants roots. But please don't ask me how it works, the explanation is rather technical and I am not up to writing it these days :).

Anemone corms are easy. Soak them first overnight in warm water and then plant them 3 inches deep with the pointed end upwards.
