Yesterday’s wind and rain caused my pretty Sambucus Nigra to bow with several of the thinner branches almost bending in half. Today I cut them off and saved some for indoors. Big mistake! The stench was awful, like something rotting. I couldn’t take them outside quick enough so now they’re in the garden bin and I shall try to keep away from it until it’s been emptied. How can such a pretty shrub/tree stink so badly?
Instead, I picked my peonies which were also bending in sorrow. I KNOW they will be ok.

A healthy plant should recover in a couple days on its own. I wouldn't cut the branches at all unless they literally snapped.

flies often pollinate them hence the less than pleasant smell.
