My husband bought himself a present (see photo below) something he’s hardly ever done. I think it looks stark where it is and suggested a few small plants around it. He wants what I think is the impossible - interest and colour all year. We had this problem when debating a shrub (his choice) or mine, a tree in that very spot. Of course we couldn’t find anything that met his criteria.
Can any of you suggest what low growing choices we might have?
This is Face’s new but temporary abode. He will eventually be placed in a border - if Him Indoors and I can agree! However, he looks a darned sight better now than before and I think I won the argument because I believe he secretly agreed but was reluctant to try to move a heavy object. However, we have a trolley (it has the handle at the shortest end so providing a rectangular flat base)and between us we rolled Face onto it. then he was pulled along with me doing the steadying. All good fun!

Up against the shed with some led lights and a palm either side ,would look great at night, it reminds me of the standing stones of Easter island.

evergreen ferns, ivy, heathers & ajugas are all plants that would provide colour and form all year round.

Jake47 - oh THAT'S what it reminded me of, I couldn't think why it looked vaguely familiar....

Yes it does remind you of Easter Island, and I agree it would look much better and more in character without the little platform, and preferably in a border, where hopefully there would be a variety of shapes and colours all the year round to start with. Then adding a few other largeish stones nearby might put it in context.
It makes me think of those ornaments Noseypotter used to make (who remembers Nosey - still miss him!)

I like Sue's idea above. On that note, the first thing I would do is get rid of that awful orange box it is sitting on. It's very distracting and detracts from the actual art piece.
You don't necessarily have to plant anything. You can make a nice platform for it with a couple colorful paving stones or slate (not orange). Glue it down with silicone adhesive so that it sits stable and won't get blown over. Perhaps you can find a stone pedestal. Then surround with white river rocks. The options are endless but you can see the direction I'm going in (xeriscape).
If you MUST plant something, I'd go with simple annuals that you can change. Purple petunias or sunpatiens will bloom right up until frost. Have you seen the new coleus plants? Stunning!
With a few finishing touches, this could be a whimsical focal point. It evokes laughter and gives the eye a welcomed relief from the green green green leaves everywhere.

We used to sell things like that at work. I still remember the winter morning I came to open up, and discovered the nursery cat curled up in a sunbeam on top of one, like a toupee. Wish I had a camera, then!

Thanks for all the replies. I agree with them (except the lights) but it’s a very contentious subject in our house at the moment. I would like it moved to a flower bed too, nor do I like the ‘plinth’ he’s put it on. It doesn’t do what he wanted and that was to draw the eye away from the shed; in fact the view just includes them both. So, right now discussions have ground to a simmering halt. He’s not stubborn though so when he’s given it a million thoughts (that’s his way) we’ll come to a better solution.
When it’s sorted I’ll repost. Thanks again, mostly for agreeing with me!

Its somewhat of a a relief to hear we did all agree with you. I was just worried that your OH must have made the plinth himself and may have found our reactions hurtful as its clearly been made with care. If he is convinced in the end then perhaps he could use it to showcase something more in keeping and sited somewhere else and possibly painted a darker colour that will not distract attention from the object its displaying. If he really wants the statue to be to be on the lawn it might look good on a stone slab or grey rock as Paul suggests.
If the idea is to take the eye away from the shed have you tried siting the statue it in the bed to the left?

Maybe it's time to spruce up the shed. Kate did wonders with a bucket of paint.

This looks like a creation of Noseypotter who is a GOY member of long standing. If anyone is not familiar with him type the name into the GOY site search engine and you will see exactly why this sculpture conjures up this association.

The plinth is three slabs with a wood surround and, I agree, it looks all wrong. However, I do like your suggestion, Yorkslass. That’s one place I hadn’t considered but looking at the garden today I can see how well it would fit there. I shall wait for the right moment then use it as my idea!
Whatever happens Face will NOT remain where he is!

Arbuthnot - good luck with that -hope it gets settled to the satisfaction of you both
Loosestrife, that's what I thought too - see my first comment above!
If my memory serves (which it often doesn't these days) its not all that long since the shed was painted and admired by all...

You’re right, Yorkslass, it’s only been a few years since it was painted. Again, his choice, also the way the shed was sited. However, after almost 60 years I TRY not to be bothered by such things. It will all come out in the wash.

All this makes good material for a comic tv sitcom about what to do with this garden ornament....this first episode needs a title...how about..”Saving Face”?

Very good, Loose. Got any other title suggestions?

Lol Arbuthnot, I guess that's what marriage is all about - know when you've lost, sigh quietly and learn to live with it.. I do hope you win this one though! The new position is a big advance on the other one so perhaps it will be win-win after all!

If it has the right sun exposure that new location makes it quite a unique sundial.

Thanks for the comments. I’ll repost when Face is in his permanent position.

Previous question
Depends how much lawn you've got, because you'd need to cut away a fair bit round the thing in the lawn to dig over prior to planting. Otherwise, can't it be placed in a flowerbed or border somewhere amongst plants, rather than where it is? I do think it would look better nestled in with plants...
