Does anyone know if it’s still possible to buy seeds that will produce annuals, then self-seed in perpetuity? Years ago plants like love-in-a-mist and nasturtiums would reappear in my garden every summer, but since l moved and sowed seed from packets, nothing grows from the seeds produced. I realise this is due to marketing practice, but are there any ethical suppliers still trading?

I am surprised that they haven't grown for you. I had some nasturtiums this year and all 10 seeds germinated. As for love in a mist that has been self seeding for 20+ years.

This year I just bought seed from Wilkos and it all has germinated.

Perhaps you might try sowing thinly into pots and plant out the whole clump together when big enough? Just wondering if the problem might possibly be in your soil? My Love in a Mist appears every year here but only in one spot. We have had a very dry period earlier on though - perhaps that was a contributory factor?

Thank you for your replies, Seaburngirl and Yorkslass. The seeds l planted last year germinated, flowered, set seed which l saved… but which failed to germinate this year. I bought more, which germinated, and will try again.

I don't collect the Love in a Mist seed - just leave it where it falls and it grows there the following year. (it probably won't next year, now I've said that...)
Another thought - could it be that you harvested the seed a bit too soon, before it was quite ready?

I always leave some seedheads to drop their seeds naturally, and even so, nothing came up. I think the soil is pretty depleted, and there’s a lot of competition for nutrients from wildflowers and a carpet of bulbs. The garden l inherited when l moved was very neglected, but the succession of flowers throughout the year is so attractive that l’ve more or less let it be, and have just added a few old favourites of my own. Some of the plants have self-seeded successfully, such as geums and foxgloves, so l was puzzled when the others - usually so prolific - didn’t. Thank you for your suggestions, Yorkslass.

Just had another thought. If the soil is depleted does that result in in having a fairly compacted surface? Wondering if the seed might lie on it for long enough for mice or birds to have it for breakfast?

the last couple of years has been very poor for quality seed setting, so perhaps the seeds your plants produced were sub standard.

I’ve just been out to the compost heap and seen a nasturtium growing beside it! So there’s one volunteer from last year! Thank you for all your suggestions and encouragement.

How do I say thanks?
