I just use a normal multipurpose compost for them.

Preferably one that contains peat.

Why not consider a peat free compost? My plants do perfectly well in it without the need to destroy peat bogs. It also is possible to reintroduce moisture to it after it's completely dried up - try doing that with your peat compost

I use a peat free compost and they are doing splendidly.

I've had the best luck with a bagged soilless mix for African Violets.
