how far will the root system be of a 20 year old acer tree in chalky/clay soil

Root systems are usually at least as extensive as the spread of the branches.

And, it depends a little on which acer it is. Is it a japanese maple (perhaps unlikely as the soil's chalky), or a more robust species, like A. platanoides, A. negundo, or worse, A. pseudoplatanus? Phil J
