My well established privet hedge has patches of elder flower leaves growing from its branches… any reason why this happens?

There will be a small elder plant growing from the soil up through the privet.
Identify where it roots into the soil and then grub/dig it out. Or using a brush paint weed killer onto the elder leaves, avoid splashing onto the privet.
