with no fruit trees?

I would have thought wasps swarm when there is a large nest somewhere nearbye. We went to RHS garden at Hyde Hall recently. Most of the tables outside were empty on a lovely day. We soon found out why. So many in your face wasps. We have ten fruit trees in a small garden and hardly a wasp to be seen this year. Snails are the greatest fruit eaters, even climbing the tree to munch one particular apple. Woodlice and slugs like windfalls, and wasps, if any, are pear gourmets.

No, not like bees. Have you ivy in flower? If so, that may be the reason. Ivy's rich in nectar, and wasps do like it. They'll be feeding up before the cold weather comes. Phil J
