My laburnum is between 35 & 40 years old - hardly ever been pruned. I now want to cut off a large branch as it is crowding another tree. When is the best time to do this and will it harm the tree?

If it needs to be done, then after the leaves have fallen is the time to do it. If it's more than a third of the tre, then it might be better to do it in stages, to avoid too much of a shock to the tree. Do it over two years, cutting back to a convenient side growth the first year (which should take the bulk of the branch away from its neighbour, then removing the branch at base the next. Phil J
