I have a Niobe Clematis growing in a large pot...about this time every year its leaves turn brown and dry.not through lack of water..I'm wondering if this is Clematis wilt...After cutting it right down to soil level it puts on fresh growth and flowers.I feel I should plant deeper next year...perhaps this won't happen.

Wilt is actually rather more rare than you are led to believe.
Easy enough to tell, the leaf problem begins at the base whereas drought, hunger, slug damage start at the top and work down.
Agree with Jimmy. Clematis hate having their roots get too hot.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the clematis, it's situation that's the problem. I needs to be constantly damp and the roots need to be cool. I would leave it alone now, cut it down and re-plant it in the garden next spring; planting it a little deeper and giving it a mulch.
