How do I plant seeds on patches of moss taken out of my lawn. These patches look big and brown - not a good sight. Or is turfing it better but must require some digging.

Provided you didn't apply any chemicals to the areas in the last six weeks (mosskiller, weed treatment, feed, etc.) then dig the areas over lightly till you have a good inch or two of fine tilth, apply grass seed. Should be done as soon as possible, before end of October if you can - the seed will germinate quickly for the next week or two, after that, things slow right down.

I did precisely this about 2 weeks ago on two different lawns using my customers lawn seeds. One was a standard lawn seed and took 9 days to germinatet. The other was a quick germinating seed and took 5 days to germinate.
