I would love to know the identity of this plant. The 5-petalled yellow flowers are about 20mm across and while they are not difficult to find, the leaf shape is very distinctive and I can't find it in my gardening books.
can anyone help?

Look it up under 'Potentilla fruticosa' in your books.

I agree that's what it is -- lucky you. I CANNOT grow potentilla on my heavy clay, old stream bottom of a garden!

this is a potentilla which is a small perenial shrub. You will find that you can get the flowers in various shades of yellow cream white and orange.
