Is this something new since the last time you dug up this bed, Bev? Or is the first digging for this bed?

Hi Bev, I used to have the same problem where I used to live, I had neutral clay soil with lumps of chalk about the size of an egg dotted through it. It didn't alter the neutral ph balance. It was not an uncommon problem in the area. And unless there was intensive agricultural ploughing, the lumps would not breakdown. My plants didn't suffer, so I didn't worry about it.
