I have this strange plant growing in my garden (see photo). It has only appeared this year and seems to be growing fast. Does anyone know what it is and should I get rid of it quickly?

You would be surprised how many times this question has been asked this year! You're not alone.

For goodness don't let it seed - or you will be inundated with the stuff...so make sure the seed heads don't land in your compost heap if they are ripe!!!

Been a good year for this one! Just don't eat it (If you were even tempted, I'd be very surprised!). Phil J

As Spitz says, this Qs must be one of the most regularly asked of the year! Apparently seed of the Datura is regularly found as a containment in commercial bird-seed mixes, which probably explains it's current ubiquity.

Thank goodness I have not had it in the bird seed sacks yet....but it did "get loose" in my sitootery last year and I had plants of it all over the gravel floor.....easily pulled out obviously but a real thug - however pretty the flowers and evening scent!

Datura stramonium. Known as thorn apple or jimsonweed.
It's a much more common plant that you'd think if you just read the scare headlines about 'killer plant' and 'South American hallucinogenic'.
It is pretty toxic, but the only time it really causes trouble is when people intentionally ingest it to get high.
Pull it up and throw it in the compost.
