I was told you planted them 'sideways' but I'd already planted them the 'normal' way and a few years on, they've gone on to multiply into a nice little clump, so I don't think it matters which way you plant them, they will still grow.

Hollow side up. If you look closely at them you can see the growth points on the top of the corm. Which variety are you planting?
