I've recently laid slate chippings over part of my garden in Essex and would like to have a dozen or so largish pots with plants/shrubs/bushes in them. Any suggestions please as to which plants; preferably ones needing not too much upkeep and to give a good show of colour. Thanks

You have a world of choice. Aff. In shadier areas, you could grow Azaleas, Camellias, smaller varieties of Rhododendrons and/or Pieris - all needing ericaeceous compost, and in a sheltered dappled shade area, Acers will be happy.
In sun, Cistus, Lavender, Roses, Hydrangea, Hebe, hardy Fuchsia, Convulvulus cneorum or the new dwarf Buddlejas would all do well.
Have fun choosing.
