I have a serrula tree about 12 years old. It has had no leaves or flowers for the last couple of years. How do I tell if it has died and why would that have happened?

I agree, this is 100% dead! As Bamboo says, it could be any one of these factors. A change in drainage, ie becoming wetter is another.

If there's been no sign of life for 2 years, I think you can safely assume it is dead. As to why, can't say - honey fungus? Bacterial infection? Canker?
