Is this a holly 'tree'? The berries are out way before Christmas each year.

Looks like a holly, Casso. During most winters the birds round here seem to have enought to eat and the berries stay until after Christmas.

There seems to be an extra special crop of berries this autumn. I don't remember seeing so many on every tree. We have a few hollies which hardly have any berries normally, maybe one or two if you look hard, but this year they're very obvious. And the hawthorn hedges are covered in a haze of red too - very pretty.

I agree Beattie and given that a lot of Aberdeenshire is having problems with snow today I think I know why :-)

Yes, this does look like a holly and as said, they can berry red by the end of August onwards.

Thank you for all the comments. i have lots of holly in the garden hedges and cut it back as much as possible. I didn't know they could become trees. It is a shame the berries don't last for Christmas.

Well the berries might remain on the tree, depends if the birds need the food or not... and what else is available for them to eat.

It's a bit far away, Casso, but it looks like one. My Hollies all get their berries long before Christmas, and by then, when I want to cut some branches for indoors, the birds will have eaten them all. :-((
