Not got a clue about gardening but am having a go. Do I need to lift penstamens and store them in garage over the winter ?

Welcome to GoY Anne your penstemons will be fine in the ground.

Leave the last seedheads on, though - that gives them some protection in the winter, and don't cut them back until the spring. Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but they're not all reliably hardy - the finer leaved ones seem to be hardier than the wider leaved varieties.

No, I believe penstemons should be fine left in the ground. They are great plants, very tough and very pretty, so a good choice!
