I can never get my cabbages to heart up.Why?
I used to grow 10 acres of swedes on the farm but I can't grow them in the garden.They just bolt.Why?

It would well need to have some compost or well rotted manure dug into the bed in the autumn if you are planning on planting out cabbage seedlings in the spring, don't dig in compost or manure a couple of weeks before planting your seedlings out. Starting the seeds off in modules seems to help. We find Greyhound is one of the most reliable cabbages for hearting up along with savoy cabbage for winter. Spring cabbage never really does get the same 'heart' but is still good to grow and eat.
