This is a serious question as I do not wish to create a toxic compost, as I pour urine on my compost heap. I use a 3litre jug, I add earth, Kitchen green waste, garden green waste and shredded woody material. How often should I pour on the urine? Do I need also to use Garrotta? I try to turn the top layers from time to time. Many thanks for your help. Roger Barton.

You do not need to use Garotta if you are using Urine. All they do is to add nitrogen to the heap and increase the bacterial activity. Not sure how often to use urine, it depends on the size of the heap. The bigger the heap the more you may add. Having said that, it would be easy to tell if you were adding too much, the heap would stop decomposing and begin to smell. If that happens then all you need to do is to turn the pile and add fresh green material to restart the process.

Like Bulbaholic, I "water" the compost if I'm in the garden and need to go. Being "a laydee" I pee in a bucket and pour it on! Bob Flowerdew recommends it, so it must be a good idea. ;-)
BTW, my garden isn't overlooked, except by the odd light plane.

Well, you learn something new every day! LOL. I would never have thought of THAT!

i have a couple of old gardening books based on organic growing. they both suggest diluting the urine, or household liquid waste as one puts it, by one part urine to three parts water every six inches high. although i must admit i am not that fussy how it's tipped on

Owdboggy, I thought the point of using urine was it's full of nitrogen, in particular first thing in the morning, so if that's the case, why would you need to add more?

I heard that you should only use 'healthy' urine, ie no drugs or diseases to contaminate the compost. Not sure how alcohol consumption affects it - drunken bacteria?

I don't worry about contaminating the compost, unless its heavy metals, Seabird - 55% of London's tapwater is recycled, but the cleansing process does not remove drug residues, so lord knows what we're all taking in our water here!

Er, where did I say add more Nitrogen? I thought I said that both Urine and Garotta added it so you do NOT need to use both.

I've obviously mis read your second sentence, Owdboggy - although I could have sworn... ah well, that's being a hurry for you.
Seabird - I try not to think about it too much, lol

I don't recommend using urine where I live, but that is just because of its salt content--we have enough trouble with excess sodium in the soil and water here in the desert!

If you use urine, Rodger, you do not need to buy Garrotta. I wouldn't think that you can use too much of it. A household can only provide so much urine in a day and any excess will just run through or decompose. I use urine on pour compost but I supose that it only happens when I am outdoors and need to go.
