Neighbour's garage is along mutual boundary. He is extending upwards to make two storeys. Would like to hide or camouflage the wall in some way and need to find some quick growing tall hedging with non-evasive roots. Any suggestions?

you mite be a lot better with perhaps a couple of nice mirrors with shutters a couple of hanging baskets and some quick growing climbers instead . break the wall up and make something of the wall instead of hiding it . make it a feacture . you could if you had time render it asswell to lose the look of brick work .a virginia creeper or an ornimentle grapevine mite be nice or some clematis excuse my spelling . maybe put a water feacture against the wall to . just a thaught and you could fill it out with some nice shrubs that dont grow so big .

The trouble with quick growing tall hedging is that it doesn't know when to stop. You'd be planting yourself a problem. Go with NP's advice and use the wall as a support for a mural, a water feature or any / all of his suggestions.

Don't forget though that it's THEIR wall, so you'd need permission to fasten anything to it.

If relations are good, why not approach them and ask if their builder could cement in some galvanised eyes as the wall goes up. Come spring you could thread "fencing" wire through this to provide support for a hardy clematis (just an example).

or if there not put some large trellis to posts and put a water feacture in the middle or a coice sculpture or focal point .

beatie is right a tree the right hight to cover the hight of a house is going to be 20 foot across realy and all the other problems that go with a large tree next to foundations and planting etc . remember to that in some areas at least leylandi need planning permission.

Take time to think this out? Good neighbour relations are worth keeping? This wall will not be as bad as you think. If you wait till its finished you might find you want to do things differently? If you have the space a pergola might work better, covered in more than one flowering climber. 2-3 very tall Obilisks along the wall with climbers may also work?

there are loads of potential things you can do without planting big trees .

Drc - I did think along similar lines depending on the aspect. A nice lean to area that you could fix a perspex roof and sides to for winter, and hey presto, a "tropical" garden area!

Many thanks for all your suggestions. Will certainly keep them in mind when the wall is finished.
