clematis and cherry

My clematis and cherry tree both flowered wonderfully this spring but over the last month both have slowly died. So now I have withered leafless plants. It seems very unlikely that two previously very healthy plants (tree 20+ years, clematis 4 years) should have suffered simultaneously.
Any ideas

2 clematis dead, 1 cherry tree. Everything else flourishing. I have a terraced house and no other trees in the area appear to be affected. Bristol suburbs are not common crop spraying areas.

No - not very likely - unless from a helicopter! lol. Where are they in relation to fences etc. Could this be something your neighbour has been doing in his/her garden? I don't mean maliciously, by the way!

Well, it isn't likely to be Clematis wilt as this strikes more quickly than that. Has there been any crop spraying in your area lately? Has anything else in the garden suffered?
