Yes you can start it off in a pot but you will end up with a very big one, but they are slow to grow. They are best grown in an open space away from trees. Height around 5ft + and around 5ft wide in time. Stewart.

And depending where you live, it will most likely need a very sheltered, south facing spot - quite a few of these are not fully hardy in Britain.
