Coal ash contains sulphur and heavy metals, all of which are toxic. So definitely, NO.Just pure wood ash as Bamboo suggests.

Hallo all...here is a question in a question...maybe I should not do it...sorry if its wrong..but it is "on topic"..my question here is: is charcoal ash from BBQs OK for the garden?...after all that is wood ash as such?.

I don't know the answer to this, but it seems to me that if you're absolutely certain your barbecue coals are made from wood (and sometimes they're not) then I can't think it might be a problem. Be interested to see what others say though.

Yes, it should be Rogi. Charcoal is wood and as long as there is nothing added to it it will be fine on the garden. Crushed charcoal is used in some composts.

Even better if it is local charcoal - most cheap stuff comes from slash and burn areas of Indonesia etc.....

Didn't know that, Hoya. Could some tropical woods be harmfull to the garden? Still, I agree that local materials are to be prefered.

Thanks for the answer, Maybe I should read what it says on the charcoal bag...that might.....say whats in it and what wood it is...and roll on BBQ time again!.

N0! Coal ash should not be put on the garden at all - wood ash is okay, but not coal.
