well it looks a bit ill but keep it sheltered and it may still have life at its roots. If it hs then it will resprout. Do you know which variety it is?

i've seen a lot worse - I'm certain it's not dead, but it depends whether the growing tip has been damaged (in the centre at the top of all the other leaves). Really should have been tied up and fleeced during cold spells - this looks like snow's been sitting on it more than anything else. Leave it till spring before deciding what to do with it.

What a shame. I'd still tie it up as suggested by Bamboo because it may save the growing tip if it is still alive and I do not think all the snow and frost is past yet. You have nothing to lose. I tie up my red hot pokers every year and it does work. It may sprout babies from the roots so do not give up on it.

Thanks Seaburngirl, I'm afraid I haven't a clue about the variety but it was a lovely red.
You are so right Bamboo it should have been protected but during the really bad weather it appeared to be holding it own, it only flopped over this morning.
It does seem to be a bit squidgy in the middle.... oooer !
Thanks you.

If it's squidgy (great word) in the middle, then I'm afraid it's unlikely to recover. Only animals can be squidgy in the middle. With plants it's not a good thing! It was the variety Torbay Red, I should think. Now re-named, Torbay Dead. Worthy

Thanks Scotsgran, I have just moved it into my garage, near a window, do you think that might help.
No I will not give up on it.

5 Jan, 2011

Oh Worthy,....... Torbay Red Dead !
Thats a good one.! LOL

5 Jan, 2011

Re putting in the garage, the words 'bolt' 'stable' and 'door' do spring to mind, Valadel, lol

5 Jan, 2011

I'd still tie it up, unless you can guarantee the garage is frost proof !!!. If it is dead at least you will be able to chuckle at all those caring, sharing and very down to earth new friends you have made on GOY. We all learn by our mistakes and a big smile and gritted teeth go a long way in helping us come to terms with them.

5 Jan, 2011

You took the words out of my mouth Scotsgran !
Bamboo , wadda mean " bolt" "stable", "door", sure I don't know what you're talking about ! Hee hee !

5 Jan, 2011

If it turns out to be necessary, Tesco were selling these early on in spring last year for £3 a pop.

5 Jan, 2011

Feel sure I will be paying them a visit.;0))
Thanks for the info'.

Hang in There. I never give up on anything until its starts siging Abide with me. Good luck with it... or the next one. I envy you all in the Uk if you can get a cordiline for £3 or £4.... here on our Greek island you can expect to pay €25 - €30. xx

5 Jan, 2011

It is huge for only £4.00 or did it grow a lot over the summer? I've put Tesco cordylines in my diary thank you Bamboo.

5 Jan, 2011

Yes Scotsgran, it grew and grew, it just loved it in that pot!
Maggiski, £3/ £4 is cheap here, in garden centre's they can start at £15.
I hope it does not start singing in the spring. lol

5 Jan, 2011

Never mind, even if it does we'll all join in.

5 Jan, 2011

I'm gonna hold you all to that Weeding ! ;0))

5 Jan, 2011

Can't resist a spot of four part harmony, me.
Nice to meet u, Valadel.
I'm really not keen on cordylines, but was being polite! I know lots of people like them, but I can't see the attraction. Still I wish yours well. It may surprise us all yet...

5 Jan, 2011

Not to deathwish it or anything (it's ok, I'd cough up for yr new one) Here's a melancholy ditty for the wake:

Let’s bide a wee, fast falls the cordyline
The snowdrifts deepen; fleece was not in time…
While Valadel was indoors drinking tea
The cordyline squeaked “Oh, abide with me!"

5 Jan, 2011

Heee hee, I almost want it to die if only to hear you singing that ! Brilliant!
All together now !

5 Jan, 2011

Like Maggiski, I wouldn't give up on anything yet - in June or July, maybe! I've known "dead" fuchsias to make a welcome reappearance after the last rites have been said over them.

5 Jan, 2011

Ok Beattie, no singing yet ;0))
Vicar's on his way !

5 Jan, 2011

Maggiski, they're only small plants for £3, and only early in the year - as they get bigger, they increase the price, well, in Tesco that is. Even so, they're great, specially if you want them in tubs, better bought small. Anyway, yours isn't dead, Valadel, not yet I don't think, but time will tell. You'll have to let us know if you carry out the last rites...

5 Jan, 2011

LOL...this thread has made me chuckle, Valadel! I did all the right things this year...fleeced and wrapped all cordylines and phormiums. They were enclosed for 3 weeks at least without their fleeces being removed at all as the temperatures were so low ...plus the deep snow covering everything.

When I did remove them, 3 were...or appear to be...absolutely fine. The fourth is just like yours...soggy/squishy in the middle plus it is covered in mould! SO...the moral of the story is...fleecing/wrapping might not have saved it anyway!LOL

6 Jan, 2011

Thanks for that Izzy, feel a bit better now.
I am pretty convinced its had it BUT I live in hope it might have a baby, so it is now wrapped up in the garage. (why do we bother, when we can pay £3 at Tesco and start again)?
Anyway it made for a good story and I enjoyed the ribbing on the way. ;0))

6 Jan, 2011

Izzy's right - in a harsh winter, tons of fleece and tying up still don't mean your plant will survive. And if we keep on having winters like this, then a lot more mature Cordylines will be disappearing from the landscape

8 Jan, 2011

There's a front garden near us that makes me smile - it has two cordylines, and the owner has protected them with fleece - tied round the base of the plants about 6" high. :-)

8 Jan, 2011

I know what you mean Beattie but at least they have got more protection than mine had. LOL

8 Jan, 2011

How do I say thanks?
