Hi
My herbaceous potentillas have got quite large and I want to divide. Are they straightforward, ie ordinary division by fork or knife? Or are there any drawbacks I should take into account?
On plant

Thanks Bamboo. Got Gibsons Scarlet, Monarch's Velvet, a peachy one and Wm Rollinson all of which need thinning out. Id probly try softwood cuttings with fruticosa, but I wasnt sure if the herbaceous cinquefoil was touchy or not.

As long as you're not talking about Potentilla fruticosa, the shrubby one, then yes, these plants can be divided in early spring and replanted immediately. May need doing every 3-4 years.
