PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

Hi,
I am a student studying Graphic Design and one of my design briefs is to use type to celebrate gardens in any way possible. This includes all areas of taste, smell, look and feel. One of my ideas is to make a calender involving all the major times of the year and activities to look out for that could go on in your garden throughout the year, this could be from when to plant certain plants/veg etc, when to harvest or what insects/animals to look out for. Does anyone have any info or suggestions of what i could include? I'm not an expert in the garden field so any advice or useful information would be brilliant!

The link below can reduce your research to a minimum. It will still need to be extensive and i am sure there are many GOY members who would be sympathetic to your project. Good luck with it. http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/

perhaps you could write it a bit like a calender ie monthly . you could concentrate on each month one at a time to . just a thaught charlotte x .

Maybe a look through members photos too, might help. Go to the A-Z at the bottom of the page and look up, ie. P for pests, V- for Veg etc. and their photos might just give you an insight of what goes on through the gardening year. Best of luck anyway.

There's a book called The Gardening Year by Reader's Digest - it has a month by month guide of jobs to do in the garden, and a list of what's in flower or looking good each month. You might be lucky and find the local library has a copy, it's pretty old now. This might be the quickest way to get some information that's useful - if you know nothing about gardening otherwise, you certainly won't have the time to learn all about it just for this one project.

Maybe you could include the benefits of plants such as medicinal, even poisonous plants can have their uses!?!?
Some easy medieval recipes included with the harvesting would be interesting.
This sounds as if it could easily turn into a very large project, there is so much which could be included. The influence of weather, sun, moon, soil etc. for instance. I suggest you work out the boundaries first.
Best of luck.

Simple calendar - month by month, and within each month a slot each for some of the following - sowing, planting out, feeding harvesting, buying bedding, making up hanging baskets, pruning, feeding, what insects/butterflies to look for, what migrant birds visiting the garden, what weather conditions to be aware of (cold, wet, dry), when to get logs in for the fire, and when to sit indoors and watch the rain. Lots of leg work, but simple stuff really, and it doesn't all need to be in there. I'm just starting my own garden entre, and have to think of all these things to be ahead of the game when it comes to guessing what people might want, and what I can make them aware of. Worthy

I'm sure I am speaking for the majority when I say you are welcome to any help we can offer. You can send private messages which can only be seen by the recipient if you feel someone can help without revealing it to all the world of members. They may or may not respond. Good luck.

private messages are policed bye the way scotsgran .

They are only seen by members if they are sent. I realise abusive mail will not be forwarded but we are not talking about that. The policing is not done to prevent members corresponding with each other on a matter which might be private and something you do not want to share with all of the members. When doing college projects students may want to run an idea past someone they think will have a valid opinion without putting it on the website for all to see.

ow i agree with the policing realy just saying its just not quit as private as it seams gran x .

That all right Noseypotter. I would not like anyone to get they idea they are being intercepted for the wrong reason. we all have to agree to similar rules on any other site we might join.

The first thing that I would do is go to the library, and start reading all of the gardening books you can get your hands on. Be sure to make due allowance for your climate zone. Other GoYers who are from the UK probably have better suggestions as to which books are most useful, but I seem to remember publications by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) being mentioned frequently.
