when and how must i do a Cotinus coggygria ' Royal purpule' Cutting

I found that layering was by far the easiest way to propagate this shrub . Just pin a low growing piece down damaging the side nearest the earth cover well with soil and wait about 2 years ,you will have a good new shrub when you cut it off the main plant, make sure it has developed a good root first!!
