my palm tree is losing all the fronds (leaves) to the extent that all is remaining is the trunk and branches.
This has never been seen before and is a well established tree of 10ft tall

I assume that it's a Cordyline? You've been lucky up to now, if it didn't have this problem last year Simon. This is the most common problem asked about at the moment.
If the trunk is sound all the way down just leave it and hope that it will regrow. If there are soft or weeping areas on the trunk you'll need to cut it below the lowest of those damaged areas now.
There is a very good chance that the tree will regrow from below the damaged area or throw up new shoots from the roots, so don't write it off til summer.
