I would find out if there is a destructive pest that is common locally, and maybe spray for that. Here in the desert, we need to spray every spring to prevent infection with flat-headed borers. Pests that are only annoying, such as many greenfly or leafhopper species, should be left alone to raise the local predator levels.
Fungal diseases may be a different matter, since they have few "predators", and organic preventatives are more available.
