Transplanting mature deciduous shrub - I want to transplant a mature shrub, not sure of the species but its about 4 ft tall and 3 ft wide, its just started into growth, showing small buds.
Is it okay for me to move it now?
I want to move it from the front of a border to the back of the same border. Soil type is silt clay. Thanks

It may also help to prune off some of the top growth to give the roots more of a chance.

« Bat plant. Do you cut the flower off at the base when it is finished?
You should just about get away with it, although it's better to move shrubs when they're dormant. Prepare the planting hole before you dig the shrub out, so it spends the least possible time out of the ground. Get as much of the rootball out as you possibly can. I'dd add some compost to the soil to back fill the hole once it's in. Remember to water it regularly for the next 6 months at least. Oh - and if the ground freezes, don't even think about it!!
