I have just started to create a back garden at my new home. The problem is the garden is a former courtyard to the barn we have bought. I have dug a spades depth and then I hit hardcore (bricks etc) I have tried getting some out with a pick but it is a hopeless task. My plan was to have 2 small lawns, a small tree, a rose bed and some shrubs, with some flower borders. Is there any chance these things will grow on such a shallow soil base? I have ordered some topsoil but I don't think it will give me more than 2 ins extra depth.

I dont have any lawn in my garden as I had the same problem. I used raised beds and large containers to glow my plants. Take a look at the photo of my garden and you can see what can be done! Even a small tree can be grown in a container so take heart:)
