As you will see from the attached photo I have a small pond with a water feature and a palm behind it. The palm has now died from the last two hard winters and i am looking for something else to plant there. There is about 1-1.5 metres between the end of the pond and the fence. The conifers in the garden behind have been cut by 50%. It must not be toxic or shed leaves and preferably would grow to 8-10 feet. Thanks for any advice given.

I'd wait a bit longer and see if the palm is really dead, or whether it will shoot again from the roots. You may find that it will come back. Here's hoping, anyway.

How about Phyllostachys nigra, the black stemmed bamboo? Or Fatsia japonica, these will both keep up the tropical look of the dead palm.
