hardening off - just checking whether it is ok to put plants out to harden off on a day like today - absolutley pouring down here!. I started this a few days ago with some perennials, and i also now have taken delivery of geraniums and a primula vulgaris. Should these join the others and be outside during the day and brought in at night, until such a time that they can be moved out permanently? and is it ok to do this if its raining? they will be in a sheletered spot but getting wet is inevitable. thanks

it is usually wise to start hardening off when frosts have stopped.but if you want to do it now you could , but you must take them in at night.at this time of year most plants are suseptable to the cold weather

They are really not going to like getting soaked either. Try to find an area where there will be protected from overhead wet. As Hijuju states it is really too early to start hardening off. The on-line nurseries have no compunctions about selling plants now, best to check on the web how they will need to be looked after. If you can't recreate that environment then wait a month or more.
