Following the hard winter this year, my ceanothus is looking very sick. All the leaves are brown and crisp. It is a very large bush about 12' high and 8'wide. Do you think it will recover? I have had a close look at it and it does look like there may be some sign of new buds but as it would normally be green all year and the new buds would be flower buds, I am not sure whether the leaves will ever regrow.

You're not alone, this question has cropped up regularly recently. It's a wait and see I'm afraid - by April, you should be able to see any obviously dead areas because the rest will have grown, so remove anything like that then.
