Suddenly this year our well established ptivet hedga and two small Euonymus growing nearby have had their leaves severely nibbled. I can see no eggs or aphids What could this be? An Acuba growing near has not been touched.

This sounds like Vine Weevil damage. The adults eat the leaves, but it is the Larvae that sdo the damage they will eat the roots and sometimes kill a shrub by eating the bark at the basee of the tree. Provado Bug Killer will kill them The Euonymus are likely to be targeted, not sure about the Privet. There is also a biological control , absolutely safe to Humans and other creatures. Your Garden Centre should have it at this time of year. or try the internet.
