I want to grow herbs in a 16" hanging basket....wht herbs would be suitable and how many? :)

You could probably squeeze one Thyme and some chives in there, as long as there's lots of sun for them. Or basil with thyme in the summer. But they'd do better in pots or in the ground.

I agree they will not be happy due to too much heat and too little water.

We grow them in hanging baskets, here, but they definitely are a high maintenance project, that way! Shallow-rooted, low-growing herbs are needed: thyme, marjorum, oregano, parsley, cilantro, basil (except African), tarragon, etc. Dill and fennel grow inconveniently tall. Rosemary gets too big overall. And mint needs waayy too much water! Frequent watering and regular feeding are essentials.

in my herb book it says you can grow them in hanging baskets, but i would agree with tugbrethil in what to put in them, and they do look nice in baskets as well

I don't think any herbs are going to be happy in a hanging basket, get a large pot to plant them in. Remember that in general they like poor soil conditions and prefer to by on the dryish side.
