Just bought a shredder for the so many pruned branches and wonder if I can use this for mulching, covering the ground against weeds and saving water in coming summer. There are also branches of wild bushes which I cut back. Thanks for any comment

You can use it - but if you've not got a membrane directly underneath it, on top of the soil, you will need to add nitrogen to the soil, or the fresh chippings will steal it from your plants. Apply Growmore granules or similar to the soil beneath before adding the mulch. You will need to refresh the Growmore 6 weeks later too.

My tree surgeon also pointed out that repeated applications of shredded material will gradually make the soil more acidic. Nothing to worry about but just be aware of it

It is the best thing you can use to improve your soil. I run blackberry vines and ferns through mine with no after-growth. Just remember to keep it thick. 1 inch won't do anything. However, you should expect it to fail at the height of summer - the Algarve is way too hot.
