If you're doing it now, then I'd use pot-grown plants. Bare root beech at this time of year can be sulky, and without proper care (often before they're purchased), they turn up their toes. I never do beech hedging after Christmas. Still, that aside, as A says, a foot and a half apart, of they're a couple of feet tall, or a little more if you've got bigger plants. If you've got the space, stagger the planting (zig-zag the plants down the line), spacing them a little closer as you look at them, but actually giving them the same room between each plant. Worthy

Hi Jim,
In metric:
Single rows - space the Beech 30cm apart, double - 50cm apart with each parallel row 40cm from each other.
Personally, double rows look healthier, are more wind resistant and provide better screening for us and for wildlife.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Kildermorie - Beech makes a better hedge if its double row.

Most books recommend 12 to 18 inches apart.
