My well established 16 ft Cordyline Australis has taken a hammering during the very harsh winter. Is there anything that I can or should do to bring it nack to health ??

Sorry to hear that. You are not alone, I have lost 5 of them, I have cut them down, but left the root in the ground hoping for new growth from below, we shall see.

Sorry, it's a wait and see job I'm afraid Roy. It might shoot again from somewhere on the trunk, or it may make new growth from the roots. If and when it does regrow you can cut the trunk back to that point. Don't give up on it til the summer as it may take some time to decide to live.
Welcome to GoY - I hope your next question can get a more positive response.
