Well they do get to be large plants when mature, but have you been hacking it back in March every year? If not, do it now - you'll need a coat and gloves and a pair of glasses or safety goggles. Cut back all leaves as far as you can, right back to the central 'lump', clip out right at their bases any flowered stems, rake out the centre of the plant.
