Unknown Fruit Tree???

My neighbour recently gave me this tree, he said it's a fruit tree of some sort but he doesn't know what kind of fruit it produces, can anyone please help? The photo's not great but best I could do, thank you :-)

otherwise could be a Chaenomeles - did it flower in winter/early spring? and has it got any spikes?

Thanx for replying, I'll try take a close up shot of leaves, and I'll post them a.s.a.p
I don't know if it flowered early spring cos only had it not long ago, and I can't see any spikes on it :-)
