Hampshire, United Kingdom
Can you help identify deep purple flowers found growing at the base of a tree (location Hampshire seen 1st April)? They appeared to be growing on a mound of fungus type material and formed very dense coverage in clumps approx 6 inches in diameter. The flowers were low growing with no apparent stems and the only foliage seemed to be long grass. Hard to describe and unfortunately I did not have a camera with me.

Spot on - I have never come across it before and it would have proved difficult for me to identify. Thanks for solving the puzzle for me.

I can't take credit other than for a good memory - the same query was raised recently by someone else with a photo, and it was identified by another member of the site!
