Can anyone kindly tell me what this is? it came form a batch of plants my mother gave me from her garden, but I can't identify it. it's probably something obvious, but I haven't been at this gardening thing for very long!

Thank you Louise! I've just googled it and found there are lots of different types of Centaurea - I'm looking forward to this opening up so I can see what colour it is!!

I think this is the cottage garden bright blue one. Watch out as it flops over and needs lots of space - and it spreads freely by runners. If you cut off the faded flowers after the first flush you should get another crop in the second half of summer.

Steragram, i find that they flower continuously here - i keep deadheading and cutting back to control it a bit - and that's the result !
