Garden compost and some grit will help open up the soil structure. One of the best ways to keep the clay soil in good condition for veg is to divide the area into beds about 4 or 5 feet across so that you can avoid walking on the soil but reach the middle from paths (grass or otherwise) on both sides. Compaction by feet will be one of your worst enemies! This method enables you to garden even in wet winter weather.
